Trauma is a deeply personal and complex experience that can have profound effects on your psychological, physical, spiritual, and emotional health. Whether you’ve experienced a single traumatic event or have been living with chronic trauma for years, the impact can be profound. This also means that while there may be some similarities between people who have experienced trauma, your actual experience of trauma and how you present in therapy is often unique to you.

Often, you may find yourself feeling stuck or unable to move past your trauma. You might feel overwhelmed, sad, anxious, afraid, and/or angry. Trauma can be a deeply isolating experience, and it's not uncommon for you to feel like no one else can truly understand what you are going through. It can sometimes feel like you are carrying a heavy burden that you can't share with others. This may make you feel even more alone and disconnected. Sometimes, you might find it difficult to trust others after experiencing trauma. You could also be grappling with strong emotions like shame, guilt, and self-blame.

Other times, you may experience fatigue, headaches, muscle tension, and aches and pains throughout your body. The physical symptoms may sometimes be associated with the stress and tension that trauma may induce in the body.

You may also struggle with sleep issues, flashbacks, nightmares, and intrusive thoughts related to the traumatic event. Trauma may also affect your ability to concentrate, make decisions, and remember details.

Dealing with the psychological, physical, spiritual, and emotional aftermath of trauma can be an immense challenge, sometimes resulting in substance abuse, relationship difficulties, and a decreased ability to function in day-to-day life.

In my work with people who have experienced trauma, I take a holistic approach that addresses the complex interplay between psychological, physical, spiritual, social, emotional, and cultural factors, including race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. Drawing on my training in neuroscience, I understand the ways in which traumatic experiences can affect our brain and nervous system and use this knowledge to inform my clinical practice.
